But watermelon is her favorite food and she calls herself "Mama's monkey". She was born in the lunar year of the monkey. She even broke her arm after falling from her beloved monkey bars. We named our first sewing pattern the "Monkey Girl Bloomer Skirt". But we love monkeys and watermelon around here.
Goosegirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10438233253491253506noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937194102446307830.post-70734977035639860242009-10-24T17:40:27.908-07:002009-10-24T17:40:27.908-07:00Bereket had the adorable monkey capris and cute mo...Bereket had the adorable monkey capris and cute monkey tank top and wore it this summer. She loves monkeys. We knew about the stereotype. We chose to face it head on.. how can we battle the stereotype if we shrink away from any reference to it? Who should we fear? No one. I'm not saying this to say stereotypes are no big deal, but to say that we are teaching our daughter that she can HollyMariehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12316447804006046943noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937194102446307830.post-3061205761997861562009-10-21T11:19:04.725-07:002009-10-21T11:19:04.725-07:00I think it's easy to say "get past it&quo...I think it's easy to say "get past it"; however, I believe that we do need to be aware of these stereotypes and think how they may (or may not) affect our children...because, while our babies and children are all cute and lovable now, in the real world, as they get older, they will experience racism at some point.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01563853746617667346noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937194102446307830.post-10076562649459074252009-10-20T14:23:18.317-07:002009-10-20T14:23:18.317-07:00I'm not even aware of any stigma that goes alo...I'm not even aware of any stigma that goes along with watermelon :/rlvdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04291113512456271651noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1937194102446307830.post-7637505006135536262009-10-19T07:34:11.356-07:002009-10-19T07:34:11.356-07:00We need to get past it.
I would say a zoo theme...We need to get past it.

I would say a zoo themed bedroom is perfectly fine. While we steared clear of monkey-only-themed outfits, if there were other animals present it was fine. And hey, if your daughter grows up and monkeys are her favorite animal, let her decide if she wants a monkey themed t-shirt or pj's. We need to let it go.

I was super-sensitive (glenna marshallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18348224654818247656noreply@blogger.com
