"Adopted"

How do you feel about the word "adopted" being used for other purposes besides adopting children?  Like when someone adopts a pet or adopts a method or cause....

It makes me cringe a bit, but a word can have many meanings.

What do you think?

  1. Funny I was just talking about this with someone the other day. I don't mind the other uses much, but I have to say that I am consistently taken aback by the results on virtually any search for "adoption". When I've looked, by far, there is much more about pet adoption than human adoption. That always pains me. Especially when I stop to consider how much abortion is accepted in our society, but how we protest vehemently any perceived mistreatment of dogs and cats. It says a lot about our society and is certainly a reminder to pray.

  2. I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Many people adopt pets and they become a huge part of the family. To me it just means that a family brings someone, or something, into their home and makes it part of themselves.

  3. It doesn't bother me at all. Just semantics. I have adopted many pets. I didn't buy them.
